Oprah Winfrey and Steven Spielberg have reimagined the musical movie “The Color Purple” under the direction of Blitz Bazewule. Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for this remastered version, following footage shown at CinemaCon last month. The movie will be released in North America on December 25 and will be released globally on January 18, 2024.
The Color Purple trailer puts viewers into Celie’s mind through powerful visual motifs, with “American Idol” winner Fantasia reprising her Broadway role in her movie debut. This story also throws light on the mutual relationship between women. The luxurious musical drips and fine production are especially talked about.
Fantasia stars Danielle Brooks as Sophia, who received a Tony nomination in the 2016 Broadway adaptation. Taraji P. Henson as Shug Avery, Colman Domingo as Mister, H.E.R. Halle Bailey as Squeak, Halle Bailey as Young Nettie, Corey Hawkins as Harpo, and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor as Mama.
The cast of the adapted The Color Purple movie includes Louis Gossett Jr. as Ole Mister, David Alan Grier as Reverend Avery, Ciara as Nettie, Deon Cole as Alphonso, Phylicia Pearl Mpasi as young Celie, Tamala J. When the movie is released on Christmas Day, Winfrey and Bazwule hope its message will bring healing and hope. Winfrey, referring to her recent meeting with Fantasia, said, “That movie changed her because it gave her the power to forgive. She told me, ‘People who will come to see this movie will be more sensitive. Will happen, because I too felt the same way.'”

The Color Purple movie was directed by “Black Is King” star Baazwule from a screenplay by Marcus Gardley. Its executive producers are Alice Walker, Rebecca Walker, Christy Macosko Krieger, Carla Guardini, Mara Jacobs, Adam Fell, Courtenay Valenti, Sheila Walcott, and Michael Begg.
Other members of the team include cinematographer Dan Laustsen, production designer Paul Denham Austerberry, and editor John Poole.
